Even the most ardent firearms lover will admit that the new Smith & Wesson. The .50 Magnum revolver is more gun than anyone needs.

It has twice the power of most assault rifles in America. His shot can make a grown man stagger, while a single bullet can bring down a grizzly bear. It's so heavy and long that police say no criminal would dare try to hide it around their waist. It will cost up to $989.

"The initial response was even stronger than we anticipated, so we are increasing production to meet demand," said Bob Scott, president of Smith & Wesson Corp. Fla.

The Springfield, Mass.-based company, creator of the .44 Magnum of Dirty Harry fame, unveiled its new offering Thursday as the world's most powerful commercial production revolver. Firearms manufacturer's directors no. 2 of the nation said they hope the gun will help regain lost market share by generating excitement among a large, if "niche" market of big game hunters, collectors and recreational target shooters.

"We see this as an opportunity for backpackers," said president Roy Cuny. "A light firearm of this caliber actually provides protection against bears and other large things."

But even before the weapon's widespread distribution expected next month, anti-gun forces are pointing to its social impact.

"A hunting gun? It's a joke," said Luis Tolley, director of state legislation for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "What we have here is a gun that's designed to appeal to people who just want to put a bigger hole in whatever they shoot, and I hope they don't live near me."

Smith & Wesson built its reputation on building bigger guns. The new Model 500 uses a larger frame than all others, carries a new Smith & Wesson .50-caliber bullet, and has a thrust of 2,600 foot-pounds. While there are custom single-shot pistols that use larger ammo, the new gun is the largest production firearm chambered for multiple bullets.

In a .50 caliber, the bullet is about half an inch wide, but it is more powerful than other such ammunition because it is longer and can pack more powder, said Garen Wintemute, a weapons expert and director of the Research Program for UC Davis Violence Prevention. .

He predicted it would be a hit with gun enthusiasts, who can order one with up to a 10-inch barrel. When the Desert Eagle .50 AE appeared in the hands of the villainous Agent Smith while tracking down Neo (Keanu Reeves) in the 1999 film The Matrix, it cemented the large-caliber semi-automatic in sci-fi history for good. However, the gun was already familiar to enthusiasts, and its large-caliber multi-chamber charm was already a silver screen favorite. His first appearances were in 1985 with roles in Commando, Year of the Dragon and, believe it or not, Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment. The
