50 Caliber Glock - The .50 GI (12.7×23mmRB) pistol cartridge was developed by Alex Zimmerman of Guncrafter Industries. The .50 GI operates at pressures comparable to the .45 ACP, about 15,000 psi (100 MPa). Felt recoil is not like a .45 ACP. The .50 GI has developed a reputation for accuracy, although this may be due to the high accuracy of the semi-custom and very expensive guncrafter pistols themselves. In one test, a 300-grain (19-gram) jacketed flat point (JFP) gave a 25-yard group of 2.24 inches, while a 300-grain jacketed hollow point (JHP) and 275-grain JHP gave a 25-yard become Group of 2.14. Hold ten rounds in a slightly flared magazine or nine rounds in a flush fitting, this conversion gives some chance for more punch per shot. The theory behind this round is simple: why expend some of the kinetic energy to expand the projectile when its launch is already advanced?

The 50GI is a low pressure caliber based on the classic .455 Webley. At the same pressure as the 45ACP, it is easy on the shooter and produces equally fast follow-up shots, something not seen in the 50AE or 50S&W. Extended ammo nominally ranges from 185g at 1200fps to 275g at 875fps, and a 300g JSP is available for practice and hitting tough wildlife. At 700fps, the 300gr load is at the same power level as the 44 Special – a soft, easy shooting round that works well for quick second and third shots when needed. The expanded bullets are all optimized for thin-skinned humanoid enemies, with 230 grains making holes a foot deep and nearly inches wide. For the 185g caliber, the light stops at 9 inches, but travels an even wider path. Actual chronograph velocities were very close with the 4.5″ barrel and higher than speculation from the 5″-6″ barrels.
All-copper shells are quite effective at converting speed to expansion without fragmenting the blades or collapsing on themselves. Muzzle flash was minimal with all the loads I tried (185, 230, 275 and 300).
As you can see, the shortened rim allows for a 45ACP size cover. Magazines are easily loaded with just your fingers. Depending on the load, the degree of muzzle recoil was minimal to negligible, definitely on par with the 45ACP experience. One drawback of the Glock conversion compared to the excellent Longslide 1911 was reduced accuracy. My 9-shot groups at 10 yards were about 2.25 inches, and the 1911, with its longer sight radius and better propulsion, pushed 7-shot groups to an inch. Again, with the #4 long slide, the group size was ten yards less than the expanding ball size! It wasn't quite as good with the Glocks, although the difference was probably more ergonomics than the mechanics of the devices.
Because 50GI ammo is expensive, shooters are expected to primarily practice handling the 45ACP upper similar to carrying the 50GI upper. With the similarity of the shooting experience between the two calibers and the excellent reliability of the conversions, this is the right approach. Unlike more energetic cartridges such as the 10mm Auto and 44Mag, the 50GI does not wear out the shooter during training and is relatively sparing of vulnerable hearing with subsonic loads.
Glock 22 Conversions — .40 S&w, .357 Sig, 9mm
Compared to stock Glock magazines, the conversion loses quite a bit of capacity, from 13+1 to 8+1. Each bullet gains about 22% frontal area both before and after expansion. The compromise is up to you. Is it worth getting nine stronger hits before you reload, or five more hits before you have to change mage?
As you can see, extended barrels are available. Although they only add a bit of speed, threads for suppressors are an option. Although the 50GI is currently only available from Guncrafter Industries, several handload recipes call for an even smaller base load. Baked brass can be used many times.
