50 Cal Handguns - When the Desert Eagle .50 AE landed in the hands of the bad guy, Agent Smith, hunting down Neo (Keanu Reeves) in the 1999 film The Matrix, it firmly established the large-bore semi-auto in sci-fi lore. However, the gun was already known to enthusiasts, and its great charm in various chambers was already a favorite on the movie screen. He first appeared in 1985, with roles in Commando, Year of the Dragon and - believe it or not - Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment. An unusual gun featured in RoboCop, The Punisher, La Femme Nikita, Austin Powers and dozens of others.

However, the Desert Eagle.50 AE's innovative design and performance in real life are just as impressive as its movies. The first patents for a semi-automatic gas drive were granted in 1983, and further improvements were registered two years later.

The piston-type self-loading mechanism uses a three-pronged rotating bolt similar to that found in many semi-automatic rifles today. The stainless steel tube is stationary and does not move while driving. It is chambered in .50 AE and has a seven round magazine. All have a built-in muzzle brake to reduce recoil.

Pillager, a Minnesota-based Magnum Research company that has been part of the Kahr Firearms Group since 2010, manufactures firearms right here in the United States. The flat black versions are the cheapest in the current lineup with a suggested retail price of $1,900. They are equipped with 5-inch barrels and 1:19-inch grooves. The sights are solid, with an overall length of 9.69 inches and a weight of 3 pounds, 0.6 ounces.

The frame is aluminum, and the lock on which the slat for mounting the optics is located is steel. The single action trigger pull is four pounds and the manual safety is double action.

However, among the most popular are models wearing stainless steel flip-flops. Barrel length increases to 6 inches and weight to 3 pounds, 7 ounces. Recording speed remains the same, with a suggested retail price of $2,255 for the black aluminum-framed version.

In terms of accuracy and performance, American Rifleman's testing and full review found that "...one of the best groups fired with the 300-gr MRI. JHP and measured just 0.95 inches. The average group size for the three loads tested was just about 1½ inches, which I think is pretty good for a stock pistol chambered for the .50 AE rattling bullet. Reliability during my tests was impeccable—no stalling."

Today, the company offers different versions, with different features and color designs, including one with a gold finish reminiscent of the Austin Powers look. There are even different chamberings available for those a little shy about shooting the .50 AE.

Springfield Armory XD-M Elite 4.5” OSP W 10mm Auto, NRA Rifle of the Week, American Rifle of the Week Last week, Hrachya posted a review of the Umarex HDR50. I happened to be at IWA 2018 when I was in Germany last week and had a chance to take a closer look at this as well as some of Umarex's other offerings.

Big Bore Handguns

I'll start this post with a little background and explanation of IWA. I've never been to IWA before. I have heard different things about IWA and it is similar to the SHOT Show in Europe. and thanks to my friend Richard from Scotland, he warned me that there would be a lot of airsoft guns and airguns at IWA. More than SHOT Show.

HDR50 is a polymer windbreaker. Mostly polymer. It has a metal barrel liner and the inside is metal, but when you pick it up and hold it, everything you touch is plastic.

The magazine is a cylinder with six bullets into which the bullets are loaded. See the bolt lever in front of the cylinder? Pull it back and up to unlock the magazine. Although, aren't they so-called airgun ammunition? Anyway, the magazine is also made of plastic with a metal insert for the locking lever.

The HDR50 is a CO2 air revolver. The CO2 cartridge is placed in the handle. As the name suggests, it fires .50 caliber bullets. As noted by Hrachya in his article, the HDR50 only produces 11 joules of energy. To give you some context, 6mm Airsoft pellets typically stay under 3 joules. For .40gr .22LR they produce about 141 joules. In fact, if you look at paintballs, they usually have an energy level of about 11 joules, so you can expect some level of discomfort from hitting a paintball. Of course, everything depends on the bullets used.

Pound Bear Vs. Hi Point Pistol? Only In Alaska...

So what's so good about HDR50? It is sold as a defensive weapon. It seems to me that defense in Europe is different from what we think of as defense here in the United States.

There will reportedly be two versions of HDR50, the 7.5J version and the 11J version. Contains a list of ammunition types used in HDR50. Rubber balls, marker chalk balls and pepper balls. One projectile not listed are these rubber tipped polymer balls. They are a bit like Minié balls. They appear to be self-igniting and potentially self-stabilizing for better accuracy.

According to an Umarex employee I spoke with, the HDR50 will be released in about two months. As this is for Germany, he doesn't know if Umarex USA will import them. He did not state the actual price of the HDR50, but it is estimated to cost between 100 and 180 euros.

At least that seems to be the case considering the size of their booth at IWA. It was certainly one of the biggest stands in this place. When I entered the Nürnberg Messe convention center, after receiving my badge, I entered the first hall related to firearms. Umarex was standing right next to the entrance I entered. To my left I saw this.

I didn't realize how big the Umarex brand was until I realized that people love them so much that they would want to have an Umarex tattoo to show their love for the brand. Every time I passed by this area, the place was always busy. This is a serious credit to an airgun company.

In January of last year, Hrachya also reported that Umarex had managed to obtain a license from Glock to manufacture an airsoft Glock replica. Hrachya's article mentions that Umarex will be making the Glock 42, 19, and 17. Well, they have some new models at IWA.

Glock 17 magazine on the left, Glock 34 magazine on the right. The Glock 17 is also CO2 powered. I'm not sure why the magazines are so different.

This light brown Glock 22 is an all plastic spring loaded airsoft pistol. You must adjust the slide to tension the spring piston with each shot.

Umarex also makes a spring loaded Glock 18C. However, this is only an aesthetic difference between this and the Glock 22 above. The selection switch is shaped like a slider. It doesn't do anything. The G18C comes with an extended magazine.

Most of the products in IWA are licensed products and most are airsoft. Umarex manufactures licensed airsoft replicas of the HK416. In fact, VFC in Taiwan manufactures them for Umarex. AEG versions of the HK 416 A5 are now working.

This "brown" 416 looks almost like gold in the light. I don't understand why I can't get the correct RAL8000. It shouldn't be difficult to match the color to the right gun.

Although not exactly similar, it looks very similar to a fully automatic lowering for a real pistol.

I was really surprised by Umarex. Their size and fandom is not what I expected. Besides H&K, they have licenses for IWI and produce airsoft Tavores. I hope Umarex USA brings the HDR50 to the US, even if it's just a fun paintball toy.
