**All visitors to the Naval Academy must enter through the Visitor Access Center at Gate 1. All persons 16 years of age and older must have a government-issued photo ID and only vehicles with USNA ID or license plates limited can enter the Naval Academy. subsidiaries of the Naval Academy.

The Visitor Center is located in the Halsey Field House. There is an information centre, tour guide service, exhibitions, gift shop and snack bar. Visit the USNA website for more information.
The Levy Center contains a synagogue, fellowship hall, classrooms and offices. It was designed by Joseph Boggs and completed in 2005. The chapel includes a 45 meter high wall that is a replica of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem and is made of Jerusalem stone.

Dahlgren Hall, designed by Flagg and completed in 1903, was originally the armory. It used to have an ice rink and now contains offices and a large meeting room. The Drydock Restaurant is at the northeast end of the building and is open to the public.

Bancroft Hall is home to the entire brigade of 4,000 midshipmen and is one of the largest single dormitories in the world. The original building was expanded to completely fill the space between Dahlgren Hall, Macdonough Hall (the original gymnasium) and Farragut Field (the original Parade Ground). Designed by Beaux Arts-trained campus architect Ernest Flagg, it features a heroic entry staircase facing the quadrangle of Mahan Hall. Note the magnificent ornamentation, including warships emerging from the parapets of the roof. Visitors to Bancroft Hall can see the Rotunda, Memorial Hall and a model of a typical midship room.
Tecumseh's Courthouse is the site of midday meal formations for the Brigade of Midshipmen and is named for the statue of the Indian warrior Tecumseh, an 1817 effigy of the USS Delaware.
Buchanan House is the official residence of the Warden of the Naval Academy. It was designed by Flagg, was the third structure to be built, and was named in 1976 as the first superintendent of the Naval Academy.
The chapel, also designed by Flagg, is given centerpiece status in its campus plan. It is the tallest building and located on the highest ground. It originally faced the shaft of a ceremonial boat basin that was unfortunately filled in and replaced by classroom buildings in the 1960s. The chapel is a masterpiece of American Beaux Arts architecture. The dome is based on the design of the 1708 Chapel Royal at Les Invalides in Paris, and the interior features windows designed by Tiffany Studios. The imposing bronze doors depict "father's science" and "mother's patriotism" and were designed by Evelyn Beatrice Longman, a young woman who won the design competition.

The crypt of John Paul Jones, the father of the US Navy and a Revolutionary War hero, was built in 1913. The design was inspired by the bombastic 1840 burial of Napoleon, located in the Chapel Royal in Paris. Jones' tomb is much more modest, but still impressive.

, the oldest military monument in the US. It honors the heroes of the First Barbary War (1801-1805) and was carved from Carrara marble in Italy in 1806.
Mahan Hall was designed by Flagg as the main classroom building. It incorporates many features of Beaux-Arts architectural principles. The symmetrical entrance is raised one story above the classroom by a bold double staircase. The entrance shaft is further emphasized by the clock tower, cupola and round segmented pediment. Sculptures of allegorical figures, repeating arches and a variety of pediments, brackets and balustrades complete the complex but tightly controlled composition. Emphasis on gorgeous architectural hardware and lighting designed with nautical motifs.

The quadrangle is an important organizing feature of the original campus plan of 1902. Today, it contains many important monuments of naval history.
, a tall gray obelisk erected in 1860, stands in front of the North Chapel. It commemorates Captain William Lewis Herndon, who went down with his ship (salutting in full uniform), the SS Central America, instead of being rescued on September 12, 1857. The Herndon Monument is the site of the famous "plebes-in-the - more" ceremony, where ordinary people (first-year students at the academy) all work together to climb the polished monument and replace an ordinary hat with a senior hat on top.
, built in 1922 to replace an earlier lookout, faces the Chapel to the east. It is named after Charles A. Zimmerman, composer of the Naval Academy battle song "Anchors Aweigh".
Across from Mahan Hall commemorates the capture of the British frigate Macedonian by Captain Stephen Decatur on October 25, 1812. WHY GO TO: Annapolis MD, "The Sailing Capital of America" has also been called the Museum Without Walls. The entire downtown area is considered a National Historic District. Four signers of the Declaration of Independence came from Annapolis, and the US Naval Academy trained many other top government officials, including President Jimmy Carter and Senator John McCain.

That's why most people visit Annapolis, and a guided tour of the Academy with 4,400 aspirants is worth an hour or so. Suffice it to say, you won't see most of its 330 acres. Start at the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center after passing an initial security checkpoint (there are signs leading up).
The Naval Academy was inaugurated in 1845 with a strong influence on engineering – as it still is today. Considered one of the top five engineering schools in the country, only 1,200 are selected from a universe of 17,600 applications.

What's the deal with Bill the Capricorn? Well, the unusual mascot got the job in 1890 for the first Army/Navy football game - after goats were kept on ships in the 1700s and 1800s to provide fresh milk.
Every few years, a rival team steals (or, in less severe terms, "kidnaps") Bill, which for some strange reason makes national news. In 2007, the hijackers of the time even filmed themselves planning and carrying out the raid on the USNA campus and posted it on YouTube (it was later taken down).
