In his video, McGrath said McConnell "little by little, year after year, has turned Washington into what we all hate ... a place where idealists die."
McConnell's team wasted no time responding with an audio video of McGrath from his 2018 campaign calling himself the most progressive candidate in the race. And describing Trump's southern border wall as "stupid" and "a waste of money," they stacked McGrath's face next to Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Hillary Clinton.
"Amy McGrath lost her only race in the Democratic elections. Because she is a radical liberal far from the people of Kentucky," McConnell's campaign manager Kevin Golden said in a statement. "Comparing Trump's election to 9/11, he supports the government taking over health care. And calling the wall 'stupid' is a welcome forum that we will be happy to discuss in the next 16 months."
After her 2018 candidacy, McGrath is probably the best-known name in Kentucky Democratic politics to run for McConnell, but since she did not win the election in the state's 6th district, she was elected. and the millions that McConnell spends fighting. Victory is therefore considered a tough task.

McConnell has a low 36 percent approval rating in his home state. And he's doing his best to engage President Trump. that approval is much higher Similarly, McGrath knew that Kentucky was a state strongly supported by Trump. And he's clearly trying to portray McConnell as a bigger villain than the president.
In an appearance Tuesday on Morning Joe, McGrath said McConnell was disrupting the Trump agenda that Kentuckians want to see accomplished.

"What Kentucky voted for Trump isn't done yet. It couldn't be done because of Senator McConnell," McGrath said. "If you think about why the people of Kentucky voted for Trump. They want to drain the swamp. And Trump said he would do that. Trump promises to restore jobs. He promised lower drug prices for many residents of Kentucky. And this is very important -- so what's stopping the president from doing these things, Mitch McConnell?"
Painting McConnell as a roadblock in the president's agenda is extraordinary for McGrath's campaign to defeat Kentucky residents who support Trump. But attacking Senate leaders in general is part of a larger Democratic strategy. A recent poll by the company's Global Strategy Group suggests McConnell may be a bigger villain for Democrats than even Trump. The poll, paid for by the campaign finance reform group End Citizens United, found that exposure to Democratic voters messaging about McConnell led the Democratic leadership to grow in the overall vote.
