45 Shot Shells - This payload holds all of its pellets in a 12-inch circle at 15 feet, making it effective for challenging air targets such as hand-thrown Ritz crackers.
The .45 ACP cartridge (right) has a .45 ACP Ball base profile (l) for increased throughput through semi-automatic mode.

If you load up and shoot your .45 Auto, RCBS has a fun die set in their special order catalog that lets you use the shortened Win .308. case for making the .45 ACP cartridge. Your average gun shop has probably never heard of this die set, but the RCBS item is 56552. When I got mine years ago, the instructions were old.

Basically, you oil the .308 case, place it in the cutter die, cut out the protruding parts with a hacksaw, then file the top edge smoothly. It's easier than it sounds. With your new holster, you simply load, load the powder, then fill and roll - just like a regular spool.
I've been making and using these shells for years — mostly for fun stuff like shooting carpenter bees as they fly out at night in the old shack my wife and I frequent — and I have a few tips if you give them a try. First, use a .410 blob as your shot glass. Ballistic Products offers several types, including one they call "stubble" that you can cut in half to make two short bundles.
Another tip is to use Alox liquid bullet lubricant to seal the wrinkles. The instructions call for using an overshot card cut from stiff card stock, but instead of an overshot card at all, I just squirt Alox into the pucker's mouth. It hardens around all the pellets so they don't leak and when you fire the pellets it separates from the Alox.
It's not uncommon for the capsule to recoil slightly, which isn't a problem with semi-automatics, but if you shoot it with a .45 ACP revolver like the S&W 1917 you can jam the gun. When firing either cartridge, the capsule retracts slightly before reassembling as the case slams back into the breech. The case may not jam hard enough to re-apply the primer, so you'll want to protect the primer from backing out by slightly widening the flash hole in the bottom of the primer pocket.

Conventional wisdom suggests that if you can build the case in .308, you can also make it in .30-'06, but you can't. The extractor grooves on the .308 are cut at the same angle as the .45 ACP, but the grooves on the .30-'06 are different, so you end up with an unreliable extraction. Even with the correct casing, you may not get reliable semi-automatic function using the cartridge as the cartridge casing orifice may open into the chuck neck. If so, you'll have to manually rotate each shot, which for me is a minor annoyance when photographing bees, dragonflies or grasshoppers.
Cutting this .410 wad in half offers handloaders the option of a long or short "brush" wad.
The steps for building a .45 ACP case are (left to right) cutting the .308 case, loading and unloading the powder charge, loading the cartridges and filling the case, crimping and sealing with Alox liquid bullet lubricant.
After pressing .308 Win. in the die cut, cut off the excess with a hacksaw and finish with a file.

Due to the wide variety of 45 ACP pistols, we are unable to verify that they work on all makes and models. They would function in the 1911 Colt M, the Colt gold Cup
All of our cases have a Crimp starter. Complete crimping can be done only without an additional set of dies. Get started with your Crimp-Seater 45ACP die. Mount your Crimp-seater mold as usual in your press so that the die touches the Shell holder at the top of the Punch. Back off the rounded nose section of the seat. Install loaded rounds with complete shots and top wads. Roll dice box B over the stroke. Tighten the plug until it touches the box. Begin tightening the seat holder 1/8 turn. Payment box. Repeat the Twist pattern until desired crimp is achieved.
